A person may complete courses, earn certificates, attend webinars, revise interview questions and learn the language of a new profession. Yet when they apply for roles, they are still asked for practical experience. Employers want evidence that the person can do the work. The learner wants an opportunity to prove they can.

Why simulated work experience is not pretending

Some people may assume that if the experience is not formal employment, it has no value. That is too narrow. Pilots use flight simulators before flying aircraft. Simulation is used in many serious fields because practice matters.

The purpose of simulation is not to pretend that the learner has held a job they have not held. The future of professional training is likely to be more evidence-led.

It should also be honest about what it is. Simulated experience is not the same as paid employment and should not be misrepresented. Its purpose is to build readiness and evidence through structured practice — that clarity protects both learners and employers.

It can help create realistic scenarios, generate stakeholder-style communication, provide feedback, support role-based practice, adapt difficulty and help learners reflect on their work. Used responsibly, AI can give learners more opportunities to practise than traditional training models often allow.

However, AI-supported simulation must still be designed carefully. Scenarios should be credible, feedback should be useful, and outputs should be assessed against clear standards. The best use of AI in simulation is not to make learning feel futuristic — it is to make practical learning more accessible, structured and repeatable.
